  • What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is very different from what you may have seen on television or in the movies. It is a naturally occurring, deep state of relaxation in which the conscience mind is bypassed, allowing positive suggestions to be directed to the subconscious. Hypnosis enables you to take new ideas and implement them more easily. Using hypnosis, you can eliminate counterproductive beliefs and/or habits in a short period of time.

Research shows that hypnosis is a highly effective tool for the control of habits, the release of negative emotions, and the achievement of your true potential. Currently, hypnosis is one of the top mind/body therapies.

Is hypnosis a safe form of treatment?

In 1955, the British Medical Association issued a report stating that hypnosis was a valuable medical tool.

What does it feel like to be hypnotized?

Hypnosis feels like those few minutes before falling asleep at night or before fully waking up in the morning. You’re able to hear all of the sounds around you, yet you feel very relaxed and calm. You will emerge from sessions feeling refreshed.

Have I ever been in hypnosis without realizing it?

The meditative state you reach, say, riding in the car, reading a book, or watching a movie, are all examples of hypnosis. As you can see, hypnosis is safe, natural, and part of your everyday life.

    How does hypnosis work?

The hypnotherapist facilitates your entry into this relaxed state but the ability to actually go into hypnosis and make changes is entirely in your hands. You will be able to tap into your subconscious mind in order to make positive change. With the hypnotherapist as a guide, you put yourself into that state, which is why all hypnosis is considered self-hypnosis.

Will I fall asleep during hypnosis?

You will be awake and aware of everything going on around you. Even though you may feel like you are on the verge of sleeping, you will not fall asleep. You will be very relaxed and will remember everything that took place during your session.

Will I say anything I don't want to?

Hypnosis does not create a compulsion to reveal secrets. Under hypnosis, you cannot be made to say anything you don’t want to.

Will I lose control during the session?

Even under hypnosis, you are in total control and can end a session at any point. Under hypnosis you can’t be made to do or say anything that goes against your beliefs or values. Hypnosis will actually enable you to gain control over any issues you wish to change.

Will I get stuck in hypnosis?

You cannot get stuck in hypnosis. If the hypnotherapist were to stop talking, you would simply open your eyes, or—if you were very relaxed—you would just drift off to sleep.

What if my mind wanders during the session?

If your mind wanders, it isn’t a problem. You can just let that thought move through your mind like a cloud while you continue to listen to the hypnotherapist’s voice.

    Can anyone be hypnotized?

Almost anyone can be hypnotized. A person must have two things: 1) the ability to make a choice, including the choice to be hypnotized and 2) the desire to be hypnotized. Anyone who fits these two criteria can achieve a hypnotic state.

How do I know if I have a reputable hypnotherapist?

You can feel very secure with your hypnotherapist if he or she is NGH certified.  The National Guild of Hypnotists trains and certifies hypnotherapists.  Hypnotherapy is an unregulated industry in Canada; if a hypnotherapist is a member of the NGH, it means he or she possesses specific qualifications, abides by a strict code of ethics, and pursues ongoing studies to receive annual recertification. The NGH sets the standard for the industry by insuring that clients receive the highest degree of service from its members. Founded in 1952 and the National Guild of Hypnotists is the oldest and largest organization of its kind. You can ask to see your hypnotherapist’s NGH certification. If you have doubts, you can contact the NGH through their website.
